We can eat yellowtails all year around. Even among them, yellowtails being caught from December to next February is called “寒鰤 (winter yellowtails)”
Winter yellowtails are just before spawning and have plenty of fat.
It’s awesome. Though I don’t eat yellowtails so much, winter yellowtails are special for me 🙂
Yonehana in Tsukiji Market serves marinated winter yellowtail bowl (寒鰤漬け丼, 1500 yen) in this season only. I ate it last year, too.
There were six thick-sliced winter yellowtail on the rice.
You can’t find the rice at all !
I took a big bite into those slices of winter yellowtail like a beast 😛
Just like oysters and soft roe, winter yellowtail became necessity foods for me to eat in every cold season.
