Matsumoto Castle (松本城) is famous for its elaborate light displays, including projection mapping during special events. However, I visited during a time when no such events were being held. That said, Matsumoto Castle is illuminated year-round.

This time, I enjoyed the usual lighting. The castle tower illuminated against the darkness was truly breathtaking.
Matsumoto Castle is about a 15-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station’s Oshiro-guchi exit.
Access to the castle grounds is free unless you enter the main keep. Many locals even walk through the grounds during the day. At night, the minimal lighting makes it a little tricky to navigate, so walking slowly is recommended. Although the lanterns in the photos may appear bright, they’re actually quite dim in real life.

And finally, the main keep. While the vibrant event lights are stunning, the serene contrast of black and white against the pitch-dark sky during the regular illumination is equally mesmerizing.

If you’re interested in experiencing projection mapping, check out Matsumoto Castle’s official website for the event schedule. Currently, they’re hosting a winter light-up event!
