Tokyo: Hidden seafood gem Dourakutei (お食事処 道楽庭) in Kachidoki near Tsukiji – generous tuna bowls await

Tokyo

Tucked away on a backstreet in Kachidoki close to Tsukiji, Dourakutei (お食事処 道楽庭) is like a hidden gem—so discreet from the outside that you wouldn’t guess what’s inside. About ten years ago, I took a chance and stepped in, only to be blown away by the delicious grilled tuna collar and seafood bowls. They were not only tasty but also incredibly affordable at just 800 yen. Ever since then, I’ve been a regular visitor. A few years ago, the restaurant was featured on the TV show Bananaman no Sekkaku Gourmet, and it’s been hugely popular ever since, making it harder to get in. But I finally managed to visit again for the first time in a while.

Currently, the grilled tuna collar set meal (鮪のカマ焼き定食) is extremely popular—so much so that you’re lucky to find any left before 1:00 PM. It was sold out by 1:00 PM on the day I visited as well. The set meals (grilled tuna collar or dried mackerel) are now 1,000 yen and both include a small serving of tuna sashimi. Rice bowls are 1,200 yen. You can get one free refill of rice.

There are about 16 seats total, I’d say. During lunchtime, expect to share tables with others. The tables are small, so it gets a bit tight when all the seats are taken.

Since the grilled tuna collar was sold out, I went with the tuna and minced tuna bowl. It’s been a while since I had it. Can you tell how generous the portion is? The first thing I had to do when it arrived was create some space to dig into the rice—it’s completely hidden.

Toppings include daikon sprouts, quail egg, flying fish roe, cucumber, cherry tomato, and pickled ginger. Quite the hearty dish. It also comes with simmered vegetables, pickles, miso soup, and rice. The price has gone up by 200 yen since I first visited, but you won’t find a seafood rice bowl with this volume and quality for 1200 yen anywhere else! No wonder it’s become so popular these days. The rice is sweet vinegared sushi rice—plentiful and delicious.

As a reference, here’s a quick look at Dourakutei’s most beloved dish: grilled tuna collar set meal. The photo is from four years ago, when it was still 800 yen. Back when things were cheaper. The simmered dishes and miso soup were quite luxurious back then too.

The “mini” tuna sashimi that comes with it is actually pretty generous. The quality of the tuna is excellent.

And here’s the tuna collar—depending on size, you get one or two pieces. Grilled to perfection with plenty of juicy meat and rich fat. It comes with grated daikon radish and mayonnaise, but it’s well-seasoned even without any condiments. It’s so flavorful that it goes great with rice. And with a free refill of rice, you can enjoy one bowl with sashimi and another with the tuna collar. Perfect combo 🙂
