I heard that Karatsu Castle was being illuminated, so after having dinner, I decided to visit. It might depend on the season, but the streets were quite dim, and even though it was after 7 PM, the path felt a bit uneasy. However, the castle’s illuminations were stunning. The illuminations are said to be on from sunset until 10 PM.
This is actually the route I took on my way back, the “Jyonai Bridge” that spans in front of the castle. From Karatsu Station, you’ll pass through here. It was relatively well-lit, and the illuminations were beautiful, so I recommend it. It’s about a 25-minute walk from Karatsu Station. The road I took on my way there was a national highway (Kokudou). It was narrow, had few streetlights, and cars passed by continuously, so it was a bit scary.
So, I passed through the national highway and made my way to the castle tower. There were hardly any people, probably because it was the off-season.
It looks like a really steep downhill staircase, but it’s actually an uphill one (lol). In reality, it was much darker, and I had to be very careful with each step while walking.
Finally made it this far. Karatsu Castle was built in 1608 using materials from the abandoned Nagoya Castle (名護屋 ,Not 名古屋) from the Edo period.
More stairs.
And I finally reached the castle tower! Since the surrounding lights were minimal, the castle really stood out and looked stunning. The castle tower closes at 5 PM, so if you spend time there until closing and then explore the area, you can enjoy both the tower and the illuminations almost simultaneously.
In spring, cherry blossoms bloom, and in early summer, wisteria flowers bloom, so I imagine the illuminations would be even more beautiful during those seasons.
